In Eric Berne's book, The Games People Play, he explains why it is a mistake to disagree with other people.  This in turn explains why heresy has always been greeted with such unpleasantness. Some inquisitions were worse than others, but it is the Spanish Inquisition which has the big reputation. You might be as innocent as a daisy, but they would go on torturing you until you confessed to something. Thank Goodness, this kind of thing couldn't happen today in the 21st Century.
